Press Release: KPIX5 and KY3 Partner with SpotCrime

TWO OF THE NATION’S LARGEST TV STATIONS PARTNER WITH SPOTCRIME TO PROVIDE LOCAL CRIME DATA

BALTIMORE, MD (3/25/10) ---
Two of the oldest and largest television stations in the nation – KPIX5 in San Francisco and KY3, Inc. in Springfield, MO – are the latest media outlets to offer viewers local crime data provided by Baltimore-based SpotCrime.

The largest independent data and news company mapping crime worldwide, SpotCrime provides listings of local crime incidents and a map of that criminal activity.

“Through our proprietary model, SpotCrime pulls crime incident data from multiple sources, including state and local police departments and validated news sources, to produce a comprehensive record of local crime information,” explains SpotCrime Founder and President Colin Drane.

Both KY3, Inc. (KY3.com and KSPR.com) and KPIX5 (cbs5.com) operate the top-rated news stations in their respective markets. KY3, Springfield’s NBC affiliate, currently produces 22½ hours of news weekly and is one of the top-rated NBC affiliates in the country. The company also operates KSPR, the ABC affiliate in Springfield. KPIX, meanwhile, was the 49th station nationwide to go on the air and the first in Northern California. KPIX has been affiliated with CBS since 1949.

SpotCrime data will be available on KY3 at www.ky3.com/news/spotcrime and on KPIX at http://cbs5.com/crime.

SpotCrime’s crime mapping data now reaches more than 80 percent of the U.S. population, primarily through partnerships with major media companies around the country. Those partnerships – which have made local crime data available through more than 100 media outlets nationally – include deals with Local TV LLC, Newport Television, Fisher Communications, Capitol Broadcasting Company, Hubbard Broadcasting Corporation, and Nexstar Broadcasting.

“SpotCrime is founded on the principle that information is power, and it is the right of every citizen to have easy access to crime information in his or her neighborhood,” says Drane. “With our crime data in hand, citizens’ awareness of their surroundings will increase, enabling them to make better and safer decisions.”

In addition to its media partnerships, SpotCrime’s crime mapping data is available through an iPhone mobile application launched earlier this year. The iPhone app allows users to view crime data by proximity of date, obtain detailed descriptions of the crimes listed, and share crime incidents with others via email. In addition, the app employs augmented reality (AR) to allow users to see a live view of a real-world environment (a street corner, for example) whose elements are merged with computer-generated imagery of crimes which have occurred in that location.

Individuals can sign up to receive SpotCrime’s free crime mapping service. SpotCrime sends its subscribers regular email alerts detailing reported crimes within a two-mile radius of a designated location, such as their home or workplace.
